About Saint Finbarr: Saint Finbarr (c. 550c. 620) was a Bishop of Cork in the 6th century and is the patron saint of the city and Diocese of Cork. Born near Bandon, he was originally named "Lochan" and later renamed "Fionnbharr" (Fairhead in Irish) for the color of his hair. Finbarr is believed to have lived on an island hermitage at Gougane Barra before founding a monastic settlement that eventually became the city of Cork. Some accounts suggest he traveled to Rome and preached in Barra, Scotland. He died in Cloyne, Cork, and was buried at Gill Abbey, the site of the present-day Church of Ireland Saint Finbarre's Cathedral.

Variations of Saint Finbarr's name include "Finbarre" or the modern derivation "Finbar." His feast day is celebrated on September 25.

Saint Melania the Younger was a wealthy Roman patrician noble and the granddaughter of Saint Melania the Elder. She was married against her will to Valerius Pinianus (Saint Pinian) at age 13. After the death of their two children and to escape invasions, they moved to Tagaste, North Africa in 410 where they met Saint Augustine of Hippo. Despite remaining married, both took vows of celibacy, freed their slaves, sold their lands, and gave the proceeds to the poor. They built two monasteries for Saint Augustine before moving to Jerusalem around 417, where they entered a monastery and convent.

Saint Melania was a friend of Saint Paulinus of Nola and Saint Jerome and was widowed in 432. She directed the convent on the Mount of Olives for several years.
